The Madison Parish School District is located in the northeast region of the state of Louisiana. With four parish-encompassing schools, the Madison Parish serves approximately 1,200 students. Superintendent Benita Young believes in holding “high expectations for our staff to provide our students with the dignity in a caring and nurturing environment” and lives this focus through her leadership each day. Just recently, the district was recognized by the Louisiana Department of Education as an outstanding school system for growth in three key areas in 2019: African American students, economically disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities.
One focus area has been a commitment by the district team, NIET support partners, and multiple outside vendors to provide consistent feedback to educators around key look-fors in Tier 1 curriculum implementation. This feedback is then leveraged at the school level to drive timely cluster new learning grounded in current classroom and curriculum implementation needs. Alignment of support and feedback has helped provide a clearer picture of high-quality instruction that encompasses both the what (Tier 1 curriculum) and the how (the NIET Teaching Standards Rubric). Additionally, master and mentor teachers across the district are committed to engaging in using a Tier 1 curriculum every day to help them understand what is needed to successfully implement the curriculum — whether it’s assessment, structure, pacing, or differentiation — before coaching others.
Here is some context on how each school is focusing on that work in year 4.
Tallulah Elementary School
Serving students in grades pre-K through grade 3, Tallulah Elementary sets high expectations for the youngest learners. Principal Kimberly Pittman leads with a focus on cultivating a climate that allows students to meet these high expectations through a focus on the school goal: “to improve teacher efficacy so that it positively increases student achievement.” Principal Pittman and her leadership team demonstrate these values by engaging in consistent, high-quality teacher support practices.
Wright Elementary School
Wright Elementary, serving grades 4-6, clearly demonstrates how successful implementation of TAP structures can help build teacher efficacy and student achievement. As one example, the school posted double-digit school performance score gains from 2017 to 2018. This year, Ericka Broadnax begins her tenure as principal with a clear focus on student outcomes in classrooms, in instructional leadership team meetings, and in cluster meetings.
Madison Middle School
Striving to meet the needs of students in grades 7 and 8, Madison Middle sits adjacent to Madison High School. Both schools are led by Principal Lucille Lovette. Principal Lovette, a congressionally recognized educator, brings extensive experience to her leadership role. Today, work in Madison Middle School centers on the motto: “Excellence in All We Do” as Principal Lovette and her leadership team dedicate themselves to maintaining a data-driven approach to work with teachers and students.
Madison High School
Madison High School, serving grades 9-12, was recently recognized by the Louisiana Department of Education as an Outstanding School in Northeast Louisiana for top growth in ELA and math for 2019. Also led by Principal Lucille Lovette, Madison High School has continued its upward trajectory by focusing on the improving the quality of teaching and learning through implementation of data-driven cluster meetings and establishing consistent routines for teacher feedback focused on student outcomes and Tier 1 curriculum implementation.
Madison High School GEAR UP students shared a photo op with Tallulah Mayor Gloria Hayden for National GEAR UP Week.
Madison High School Consumer Science students prepared lunch for staff as an end of the year culminating activity. Students were able to demonstrate their cooking and baking skills as they prepared several recipe dishes and desserts all under the guidance of their teacher Mrs. Faye Thompson.
Thank you students for an excellent job in preparing a scrumptious meal and your impeccable service. We hope to have more students like you next year.
Congratulations to these Madison High School teachers for their amazing accomplishments!
