Middle School Scientists Dive into Squid Dissection at Madison 21st CCLC After-School Tutoring

On a recent afternoon at Madison Middle School’s 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) after-school tutoring program, students swapped textbooks for lab gloves as they explored marine biology firsthand through a squid dissection activity. Under the expert guidance of the teachers, young scientists were introduced to anatomy, scientific observation, and hands-on inquiry in an engaging and educational experience.
The 21st CCLC program, which provides extended learning opportunities for Madison Middle School students, organized the dissection to enrich the standard curriculum with real-world science. Participants were encouraged to ask questions, make detailed observations, and connect what they learned in the classroom with an authentic lab experience.
“Activities like this give students the chance to see science in action, not just read about it,” said Dr. Rebecca Revels, the supervising educator. “It builds confidence, curiosity, and a deeper appreciation for how living organisms are structured and function.”
Throughout the session, students examined the external and internal anatomy of the squid, identifying key features such as the mantle, tentacles, beak, eyes, and internal organs. After school tutorial teachers demonstrated proper dissection techniques and emphasized safety, respect for specimens, and scientific vocabulary.
“I didn’t know squids had so many parts!” exclaimed one student, carefully referencing a diagram. “It was really cool to see how everything fits together.”
Beyond biology concepts, the activity helped reinforce critical thinking and teamwork. Students worked collaboratively, shared insights, and supported one another through each step of the dissection process.
The Madison Middle School 21st CCLC program plans to continue offering hands-on STEM experiences throughout the school year. These opportunities are designed to inspire students and support academic achievement in fun, meaningful ways.
